At the initially-ever TeslaCon Florida convention toward the conclude of 2022, automotive engineering superstar Sandy Munro was just one of the showcased speakers (ahem, I was one more one). Initially, I wasn’t guaranteed what to be expecting from his presentation, but when I saw that it was principally heading to be a Q&A, I realized it was likely to be juicy. So, I pulled out my cellular phone and moved up to the front in buy to hopefully seize a handful of excellent soundbites. It ended up that Sandy shipped a ton of soundbites.

Down below is a roundup of some of the top types I pulled out of the Q&A. (Also, right before I roll into these, observe that we will be interviewing Sandy Munro soon for our CleanTech Communicate podcast collection.)

Higher than: A Tesla Product 3 (Image: Casey Murphy / EVANNEX).

1. Tesla is “engineering at the velocity of assumed.”

Tesla’s rate of innovation in item development as properly as production evolution is unmatched, Munro indicates. Chatting about the brain-bogglingly rapidly innovation, he stated, “I equate Tesla to mainly engineering at the pace of imagined. They shift more rapidly — 10, 20, 100 situations quicker — than any organization I’ve ever viewed. We can’t consider how a lot of modifications they manufactured in two yrs on the Model Y.”

This has long been one particular of the vital Tesla strengths Elon Musk has highlighted. In fact, it was a couple yrs in the past that he responded to a CleanTechnica write-up on Twitter declaring that it was all about the rate of innovation. He also reiterated this a couple of instances to me in direct messages in numerous strategies.

2. Will anything stop Tesla from getting to a $24,000 car or truck? “No.”

Nick Howe, President of Florida Tesla Fans and lead organizer of TeslaCon Florida (which, we should really be aware, EVANNEX was a key sponsor of), described some responses from a new Tesla shareholder meeting phone in which Elon Musk indicated Tesla was functioning on a system that was about half the price of the Product 3 system. He deduced this would indicate a price tag of about $24,000. He then asked Sandy no matter if something would halt Tesla from accomplishing this focus on. Sandy’s reaction was a concise, company, and brief “No.” Following pausing for remarkable effect and quite a bit of laughter, he elaborated a very little bit by talking about Tesla’s approach (together with some special tidbits) to molds, casting (gigacasting), and other manufacturing procedures.

3. Tesla Cybertruck “will kick the daylights out of a marketplace we don’t even have ideal now.”

Sandy Munro enjoys the Ford F-150 Lightning. He experienced a selection of optimistic matters to say about Ford in the course of the Q&A, such as how well he thinks the Lightning will do in the traditional pickup truck current market. That also led him to the Cybertruck, which he does not see as fitting in, precisely, to the pickup truck marketplace. Fairly, he thinks it will produce a full market section of its individual!

“To me, that truck will kick the daylights out of a industry we really don’t even have right now. And that’s a actuality. It is bought its individual distinctive market place, and any car or truck that can appear out and have its personal distinctive current market will generally dominate it permanently — unless of course they do some thing silly. I think Tesla is heading to make a ****load of income on the Cybertruck.”

4. Trying to sell automakers on casting for 15 yrs just before Tesla came alongside.

Clearly annoyed at the absence of innovation, courageousness, and engineering efficiency from legacy automakers, Munro talked about his extended love of casting and how lengthy it took for an automaker to be part of this lovefest. He claimed he heard just about every excuse in the ebook for why automakers couldn’t do hardcore casting and the lonely solid frame sitting on his office environment ground.

“15 years and nobody picked up on it, and then Tesla, I criticized them — I stated, ‘you’ve acquired 120 areas, it really should be one’ — and the next thing you know, they made the alter. How they do items and how every person else does them — there’s no comparison.”

5. Sandy aims to get on the board of Chrysler and assist help you save it.

Requested about which automakers he thinks are carrying out factors suitable (moreover Tesla) and will endure, Sandy spelled out that he noticed automakers shrinking as they battle to evolve in the changeover. It is really a challenging obstacle for them, possessing to scale down ICE enhancement and revenue whilst scaling up EV development and income. “I feel there will be survivors. I assume it’ll be a full large amount smaller,” he observed. But the most intriguing component of this discussion — for me, at minimum — was his aspiration of investing sufficient dollars into Chrysler to get on its board (when Stellantis is forced to spin it out).

Speaking about various legacy automakers: “And they are likely to have to divest a entire ton, in a hurry. I do not know what people people are gonna do, but they are in deep trouble. You observed what occurred with Fiat — they’ve fallen off the desk no person wishes them. [Sandy’s referencing my presentation here, which referenced this auto industry sales report.] Stellantis — the new organization, which is Fiat and PSA — I feel that they’re gonna need to have revenue. They want funds, they’re gonna have to market something off. Something they’re possibly likely to sell off is Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep. And when they promote that off, I’ll buy inventory. I’ll buy adequate stock that I will have a phrase, I will have a term on their board or one thing. I’d like to see Chrysler endure, and they’ll in no way survive beneath Stellantis, hardly ever.”

Chrysler Chairman of the Board Sandy Munro — how does that sound?

6. Chinese EVs are coming.

Sandy involved a whole lot of praise for Chinese electric powered car producers (and the Vietnamese automaker VinFast) in his Q&A. When prompted, he reported:

“So I can explain to you right now since I labored on a large amount of the automobiles that are going to be coming in from China. These are not poor-quality autos. I have just one of the cars and trucks — we have at the office environment — a Chinese automobile. It’s not a person of the kinds that I labored on, but I labored with BYD, I labored with Beijing Automotive EV Group, […] the NIO, the Geely cars — I imply, I would do workshops that experienced 500 men and women in a tiered viewers mastering how to use our strategies, and we only worked on electric powered automobiles. These fellas have experienced a lot longer to perform on electrical motor vehicles than the guys listed here in North America or Europe.”

He expects a huge long wave of significant-quality Chinese electric auto imports, and creation of these electric cars stateside as very well.

7. Only 100% electric powered now, and will not perform with Big Auto giants if he would not imagine in them.

Sandy famous that he made a decision to wholly ditch any function with inner combustion engines and Munro & Associates only performs on 100% battery-electrical cars now. He referenced international heating and weather crisis as factors for this, but  also think he just finds EVs more enjoyment now. He added that he would not do the job with automakers, even giant ones, if he failed to believe that in their method to EVs. He even talked about turning down a $1 million partnership or project from a single of the world’s largest automakers.

On top of that, he famous that he experienced modified his 50% BEV current market share forecast. In its place of predicting we’d access that in 2030, he is now predicting we will obtain it in 2028.
